THE NO MUSLIM BAN EVER CAMPAIGN CONDEMNS TRUMP’s TRAVEL BAN AND VOWS TO FIGHT IT
The No Muslim Ban Ever campaign, a coalition of more than 200 progressive, faith, immigrant, and civil and human rights groups, condemns President Donald Trump’s latest executive proclamation, issued today, which imposes new entry bans or restrictions on nationals from 19 countries — the vast majority of which are Muslim-majority, African, Asian, and Caribbean nations. This sweeping ban is a dangerous expansion of the original Muslim Ban and is rooted in the same bigotry and xenophobia that animated Trump’s prior policies. It also comes on the heels of the Administration’s racist announcement that it plans to revoke visas for Chinese national students.
Donald Trump campaigned on not only reinstating his Muslim Ban but expanding it. As a result, scores of families across the U.S. will be separated from loved ones due to a ban rooted in hate and racism. These discriminatory immigration and travel bans are unconscionable and will only hurt people.
The proclamation relies on broad accusations of terrorism and non-cooperation, the same racist rationales used to justify the first iteration of the Muslim Ban in 2017. This time, it goes even further by adding countries like Haiti and the Republic of the Congo, perpetuating a pattern of targeting Black and brown immigrants. This is racism and xenophobia under the guise of a national security policy.
Our communities will vigorously fight the administration’s discriminatory travel bans and other hateful policies driven by the administration’s white supremacist agenda.
We call on Congress to pass the NO BAN Act, which was reintroduced by Sen. Coons and Rep. Chu in February. The NO BAN Act would limit the president’s power to restrict the entry of non-citizens into the United States under section 212(f) of the Immigration and Nationality Act.
The co-chairs of the No Muslim Ban Ever campaign released the following statements:
“As people who value our freedoms, we believe that everyone, whether we were born here or made this country our home, should be able to pursue our dreams, visit our loved ones, and find safety from violence,” said Aarti Kohli, Executive Director of the Asian Law Caucus. “By enacting a new Ban against millions of people, the federal government is pointing the finger at aspiring citizens, students, and Asian, African, Latin, and Muslim Americans, hoping our country will look the other way as they destroy our jobs, healthcare, and schools - the real solutions we need for well-being and prosperity. We refuse to comply with this administration’s agenda of control, fear, and intimidation. Just as we fought to reunite tens of thousands of people who were banned from their loved ones, we are joining with people across the country and turning our outrage into action for a future where our families are all whole and safe.”
“This is not just a Muslim Ban,” said CAIR-SFBA Executive Director Zahra Billoo. “It’s a Muslim and African Ban. This recycled policy stigmatizes entire communities based on where they come from, exploiting real global challenges as a pretext for blanket exclusions. This policy may look more ‘legalistic’ than the first Muslim Ban, but the impact is just as devastating. It revives a discredited idea that entire nations—and by extension, their people—are security threats simply for being who they are or where they’re from. We’re ready to fight again," said Billoo. “Our communities deserve policies based on facts, not fear. We will not allow discrimination to be rebranded as national security.”
“The Muslim Ban was a stain on America’s conscience as is Trump’s new and expanded Muslim and African Ban,” said Yasmine Taeb MPower Change Action Fund Legislative and Political Director. “This racist ban is reprehensible and immoral and will harm millions of people and tear families apart. We will vigorously fight these discriminatory bans and other hateful policies driven by this administration’s white supremacist agenda.”
"The Trump Administration has once again imposed a ban intended to exclude people from our society based on their race, religion, and national origin,” said Muslim Advocates Legal Director Golnaz Fakhimi. “We unequivocally condemn this white supremacist, Christian nationalist attack on the pluralistic fabric of this nation. We remember all too clearly the chaos, cruelty, and family separations caused by the first Muslim and African bans—harms that have never been fully addressed. Today’s action repeats that shameful history: deepening the trauma for countless families and communities across the U.S.. We will work alongside partners and impacted communities nationwide to oppose this racist policy. Why? Because our nation’s diversity is its strength, and the diversity that immigrants contribute is invaluable.”
“In a proclamation laced with unsubstantiated legal justifications, the Trump administration has arbitrarily and dramatically expanded their previous Muslim and African Bans,” President of the National Immigration Law Center (NILC) Kica Matos said. “The impact of this new ban will be deeply racialized, as it will effectively bar hundreds of millions of Black and Brown people from entering the United States. We are outraged by these actions, stand in solidarity with the communities that these bans will unjustly harm and call on people from all walks of life to push back forcefully against these discriminatory actions.”
The #NoMuslimBanEver campaign is led by the Asian Law Caucus, CAIR’s San Francisco-Bay Area chapter, MPower Change, Muslim Advocates, and the National Immigration Law Center. The campaign is endorsed by more than 200 organizations and represents a diverse community of Muslim, Arab, Middle Eastern, and South Asian organizations and allies in progressive, faith, human rights, and immigrant sectors who came together in response to the Trump administration’s persistent efforts to ban individuals from Muslim-majority countries as part of its larger xenophobic, white nationalist agenda of exclusion.
